ORR phase-I works in full swing

It is a road that seeks to transform the fortunes of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The 167 km long outer ring road, is the mother of all roads and seeks to connect up 33 arterial roads which will both feed and receive traffic from the ORR.

Now authorities of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) say that work on this prestigious project is in full swing. HUDA had awarded the work on 24 kms of the ORR to two international companies in July 2006.

A status report on ORR, will be submitted by HUDA to Chief Minister, Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy soon.

The only hitch phase-I of ORR seem to relate to minor stretches near Chilkur Reserve Forest and Andhra Pradesh Police Academy (APPA) and a stretch in Nanakramguda.

The magnitude and complexity of the work on the 24.38-km phase-I from Gachibowli to Shamshabad became evident when HUDA authorities inspected the progress.

The Rs.515-crore phase-I works, awarded to two international companies, commenced in July and in the last five months the difficult part of rock cutting, earth filling, levelling the uneven terrain with several small hillocks has been accomplished to a great extent.

A Russian company, Corporation Trasstroy, is executing package-I of the 11-km six-lane road from Gachibowli to APPA, including the link road from Gachibowli to Nanakramguda and with junctions at Gachibowli, Nanakramguda, Narsingi, Gandipet, APPA. Work is going on a culvert, underpass connecting Infosys and L&T buildings besides ground levelling and filling work.

A Taiwanese company, Continental Engineering Corporation, is executing package-II of 13.24-km from APPA to Shamshabad, of which 6.5-km has been completed.

The package-II would have 33 structures, including a flyover, ROB, one main bridge, etc. The work on flyover and ROB has commenced. HUDA officials say the Taiwanese are aiming to complete the works in 18 months, ahead of the scheduled 30 months by deploying more machinery and technical teams.

The minor hurdles were along the 1.5-km stretch near Chilkur Reserve forest area, 500m stretch near Andhra Pradesh Police Academy (APPA) are expected to be resolved soon as both the Forest Department and the APPA have agreed in principle to handover the land but are yet to give possession of land to HUDA.

Officials are confident that it would be resolved once taken up at the Chief Minister's level with Central officials to resolve the compensation to be paid for the Forest Department. APPA sought time for relocating their present buildings before handing over the site while HUDA has been been requesting for immediate handover of the stretch to meet deadline of providing four-lane connectivity to International Airport by December-end.
