Greenlands to have slim flyover

The flyover coming up on Greenlands road in front of chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy’s official residence will have some peculiar features.

Unlike other flyovers, it will be narrow in width and what’s more, only one-way traffic will be allowed on it. From the chief minister’s residence to Rajiv Gandhi Circle and beyond towards Panjagutta crossroads and Nagarjuna circle, the flyover’s width will be, hold your breadth, only 22 feet. The length of this flyover is 1.7 km.

Similarly, the Greenlands flyover which also starts from the other side of the chief minister’s residence and proceeds towards the Begumpet flyover and beyond to the Hyderabad Public School, will also be of a smaller width. The length of the flyover will be 1.1 km. However, when this touches the existing Begumpet flyover and merges with it, it will become a sixlane flyover and which would land near the Hyderabad Public School. The two flyovers — right from Hyderabad Public School to beyond Nagarjuna circle are expected to be ready by June this year.
The flyovers are expected to solve traffic woes at four junctions — Greenlands, Rajiv Gandhi statue, Punjagutta and Nagarjuna Circle. At Nagarjuna Circle, the flyover will have a branch that will lead to Road No 1, Banjara Hills. However, there will be an addition to the flyover that is coming up on a small stretch to make it wider. This addition will come up at the ICICI ATM near Nagarjuna Circle and end at Topaz building between Punjagutta junction and the Rajiv Gandhi statue here. This will give the flyover an additional width of 22 feet and make it four-lane.

“Most part of the flyovers are of smaller width as we proposed only one-way traffic on it and that would be sufficient to meet the need,” Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad additional commissioner N V S Reddy told TOI. The Punjagutta and Greenlands flyovers are being constructed with the latest method Pre-Stressed Cement Concrete for the first time in south India.

The other special features that the flyovers will have include anti-terrorist attack proof measures have been incorporated in the construction, according to the officials. The officers have also claimed that this flyover can withstand high pressure and explosion. The foundations are being covered by polythene sheets to prevent fluoride content interacting with foundations.
