The unipole hoarding that collapsed at Jubilee Hills killing one person 10 days ago, gave way because of ‘structural joint failure’. This was the finding of the two-member expert committee formed to inquire into the incident.
The committee which comprised of structural engineer and professor of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University N V Ramana Rao and Superintending Engineer of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) R Sridhar who submitted their report to the municipal corporation officials.
“The bolts which were holding the two parts of the unipole together failed due to the size of the holes being much larger than the size of the bolts,’’GHMC additional commissioner N V S Reddy said at a press conference on Saturday. The committee also felt that the advertising agency, Ad Age Outdoor Advertising Pvt Ltd, which maintains nearly 100 hoardings and 15 unipoles in the city did not maintain them properly.
On the action against the advertising agency in the wake of revelations by the expert committee, the official said “We are building a case against the agency. Punitive action would be initiated against the firm, but the nature of the action will be decided by the standing committee of the GHMC.’’ On the penalty, he said the agency has spent about Rs 8 lakh towards compensation to the deceased and towards medical expenses of the injured. He said advertising agencies were putting flex sheets without removing the old one. As a result of this even in heavy gales the flex remain unaffected.”
“The agencies have been asked to submit fresh structural stability certificate by the end of this month,’’ N V S Reddy said.
