Infosys gets ready to set up India's biggest development center at Hyderabad
The smiles were evident on the faces of everyone present at the Infosys campus in Hyderabad. From Chief Minister, Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Mentor Narayana Murthy, CFO Mohandas Pai and the thousands of Infosians present in the open-air amphitheatre, it was a season of smiles. The occasion was the MOU signing ceremony for what is touted to be the biggest Infosys campus in the country, right here in Hyderabad.
The 550 acre campus to be located near the upcoming international airport at Shamashabad, when completed in 10 years will house 25,000 employees, and entail an investment of Rs.1250 crore. The Govt of Andhra Pradesh has already identified 150 acres of land and the balance 400 acres will be identified and handed over in due course of time. Presently, the Hyderabad Development center of Infosys is located on a 50 acre land at Gachibowli and employs over 5000 professionals.
Is that a signal to Bangalore, that Infosys has its sights set for Hyderabad ?
It depends on, whom you ask. Whichever way you may look at it, Dr Reddy and his team have pulled off a major coup, the process which took six long months. As a last desperate measure, the Govt of Karnataka pulled out of cold storage, a proposal which Infosys had submitted in the year 2000 and gave it a green signal. That to a layman might sound like an approval for a 850 acre land in Bangalore. The truth is somewhere in the fine print, as Mr Narayana Murthy pointed out.
The approval by the Karnataka govt was an in-principle agreement for Infosys to scout for land around Bangalore city and buy it if they can. And as Mr Murthy himself pointed out, in Hyderabad the government gave them land, and in Karnataka they were asked to find land on their own. Now if you were in the shoes of the Chief Mentor of Infosys, what will you do ?
