Outer ring road works kicks off

Russian and Taiwanese infrastructure majors have begun work on the eight-lane 162-km Outer Ring Road (ORR) project, a first in the country, encircling the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

The phase I of the much-awaited Rs 40 billion project is likely to be completed when the Hyderabad International Airport becomes operational in mid-2008. The ORR would pass through 78 villages. Russian construction major, Corporation Transstroy OJSC has begun work on the 11-km stretch (0-11 km) connecting Gachibowli and Shamshabad. The stretch would cost Rs 2197 million.

Continental Engineering Corporation of Taiwan started its work on the 13.3-km (11 to 24.3 km) stretch between Police Academy and Shamshabad. This package would cost Rs 2950 million. Both the packages were expected to be completed in 30 months. These two packages formed phase I of the ORR. Works on phase II are expected to begin by the year end.
