Kya Karenge Aisich hota

At least that is what politicians of twin cities will tell you if you complain about a crater called road, or garbage that is piled on like a mountain. Because, if there is a solution to the problem then you would not need the slimy, slippery eel called a politician. The problem is more so profound when you are talking to the last link in the meet-the-politician chain. We are talking of our Municipal Councillors, whose fate will be decided by us on 23rd Nov.

To be fair to the ex-councillors, they have out on a limbo ever since the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the sister conglomerates like Alwal, Quthballapur, LB Nagar, Seri Lingampally, Malkajgiri, Uppal, Kapra among others were merged to form a bigger animal called the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. To add to the woes, the elections for the new body took an inordinately long time and the ex-councillors were left powerless.

The GHMC elections also meant that many of the boundaries of the old areas simply disappeared and new ones were re-drawn. To add to the confusion the reservation of seats for women, SC/ST and BC meant that old constituencies changed hands. The fact that the the trio of YSR-Danam-DS had hammered out their favourites list was well known in the Congress political circles. But that was before the Bell 430 went down at Rudrakonda in September 09 and YSR moved out of the political scene.

Now, new equations have ensured a new round of pulls and pressures. With accusations of tickets having been sold haunting the Congress, things don’t look good for Moily and Co. So the last thing that the Congress wants to do is a whiff of a scandal, while BJP, TDP have stolen a march by announcing their candidates.

That leaves little or no time to do up a mess of a road or a fix a leaky drainage. The candidates are busy fighting to first ensure that their names figure in the list. And if you go and complain about any civic issue, they will retort in typical Hyderabadi style, ‘main kya karoon’
